A Note From Cathryn Zampa

Father Steve received this letter and photos from Cathryn Zampa. I have reproduced the letter and touched up a few of the photos for better viewing. — Paul G.

Dear Fr. Giovangelo,

At one time you asked for old photos. I hope you will accept the enclosed 8x10’s and CD. These were taken when I was in 4th grade, so about 1964. I was about 11 years old.

I am in the front left—Cathryn H. Casler, Ann Russell (dtr of John and Jane Russell) to my right. Christine (?) is immediately behind me, and I can’t remember the others.

Dr. Russell was a neurosurgeon who operated on one of our parishioners Cabell, when he was a little guy and hit by a motorcycle. His older brothers were at our house doing yard work when they got the call. As they ran out of the door they said “they don’t think he’ll make it.” But Dr. Russell did a great job. I believe he was also on the vestry.

The choir outfits were sewn by my mother. The collars were old nursing collars (she was an IU grad—RN).

I believe it is Bishop Moore in the photo.

The photo in the parish is me at about 14 years old, boy is David (?).

I was widowed at age 47, and after 6 years widowhood married a 5 year widower, a friend. It was ironic that both our baptismal certificates were lost, as both our parishes of origin had burned to the ground. I had before and after photos of the church with and without the parish hall for the priest here to believe my story. One of the before photos, you have in your hands.

There is an album of y mothers wedding in 1952 at All Saints Church with the old altar before the brick addition, hiding somewhere in storage. As soon as I fine it I’ll make copies for you. They were married March 30th, and had to get special permission from the Bishop to marry during Lent. My father was an officer in the Army and was going overseas to Korea.

I remember watching the crane, in the 60’s, hit the side of the church as they tore down the old world structure where the brick altar window is now.

I also recall putting Mary’s crown on my head (hey I was 15) when I was on the Jr. Altar Guild and we were preparing the church for Lent. At that time we veiled almost everything in purple.

When my grandparents died I inherited the plaster remake of our All Saints coat of arms (half silver-half black with gold crown and gold lettering)—the big one is in the church. A printed date of f1957—W. Elwood Post, cranford, NJ, is on it. It proudly hangs by our front door, over the cross.

If you have any questions about the photos please give me a call.

Sincerely,

Cathryn (Cathy) H. Zampa
