Cornerstone Committee Update

At the March 20th Vestry meeting, the Vestry of the Episcopal Church of All Saints approved the budget for the next round of Cornerstone Projects. Here is a brief summary and timeline for the projects:

1. Skylight fabrication and replacement
The fabrication of the new skylights for the apse will be undertaken by Spohn Associates of Noblesville. The new skylights will be fabricated of aluminum and will have insulated and laminated glass. We will be adding a contingency to this budget item in case there are problems with rot on the roof, beams, etc., from water infiltration.
Quote: $33,900
Contingency: $2,000

2. Partial roof work
The replacement of the copper flashing, slate roof, and flat roofs will occur over the Mary and Michael chapels (the north and south transepts) and the crossing. This work will be done by Smither Roofing, one of the oldest businesses in Indianapolis. We will be adding a contingency to this budget item in case there are any problems with rotten roof decking, etc.
Quote: $107,700.00
Contingency: $10,000

3. Masonry Repair
The committee has decided that since scaffolding will be in place for the roof repair, it makes sense for us to undertake masonry repair/tuckpointing in the roof area. The contractor will be Broady-Campbell, the same contractor who installed the Mary Chapel altar and has previously done work at All Saints.
Quote: $18,670
Contingency: $1,000

4. Miscellaneous Engineering Costs and Project Management
We have contracted with Arsee Engineers to oversee any structural engineering and project management that may be involved in the project. They were the same firm that completed the tuckpointing analysis of the church as part of the Cornerstone Project, so they are very familiar with the building. We are also concerned that since the skylight system is new, we want to make sure the roof structure will adequately support the installation.
Quote: $2,800
Contingency: $700

Project total
The total amount approved by the Vestry was $176,700 (including contingencies). There is approximately $240,000 in the Cornerstone bank account as of 3/20. The vestry has put a total limit on the project of an additional 10% above the project amount. If the costs are projected to exceed $194,370, then the project must come back to the Vestry for review.

Schedule
We are currently pursuing the necessary permits from the Indianapolis Historical Commission (IHPC) to begin the work. Lance Ratliff and Pat Griffin met with representatives from IHPC and have been assured that since we will be restoring the existing structure with comparable materials, we should have no problem with permits.

It has been determined that the slate roof and masonry repair work can be done independently of the skylight work. Smither Roofing and Broady-Campbell have confirmed the they can share the scaffolding and have coordinated their schedules.

The tentative work schedule will be:

- Slate Roof and Masonry Repair: end of April through mid-May
- Skylight Replacement: end of August through September

* This schedule is dependant upon IHPC and Old Northside Land Use Committee approvals.

Respectfully submitted,
Tim Jensen

Congratulations Cathy Scott

Cathy Scott has been formally admitted as a postulant for Holy Orders for the Diaconate in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Indianapolis. Having been formally endorsed by the vestry last year as required by canon law, the rector received a formal letter of notification from the Bishop’s Office this past week.

Cathy has completed preliminary requirements of ‘shadowing’ a deacon’s day to day ministry last Lent, out in Plainfield, at St. Mark’s Church. By requirement of the Commission on Ministry, a Discernment /spiritual growth Committee consisting of members of the parish met with Cathy at regular intervals over the past year. She completed an intensive weekend with the Commission on Ministry at Waycross earlier this year.

Because virtually all candidates for the Diaconate must continue in their secular careers/jobs, the program of study for the Diaconate accommodates the diverse needs of each candidate and meet specified weekends of study, class etc.

Cathy has served on vestry, is an acolyte and eucharistic visitor to the hospitalized, nursing homes etc, has organized/facilitated various adult education forums and programs, implemented a very proactive Outreach Committee which is now chaired by Patricia Griffin; she continues to serve on the outreach committee along with others and is one of our regular ‘delivery people’ along with others to the Damien Center Food Pantry from our Sunday ingatherings.

Cathy continues to work with Fr. Dan Billman and others to develop alternative worship services of prayer, Scripture and reflection such as were conducted in the chapel on Thursdays during Advent. These special services which augment our Sunday Mass and worship experiences, are now being offered on selected Sundays in Lent (March 1, 8, and 22nd) beginning with a simple dinner at 5 PM and ending with these Prayer Services in the Chapel.

The Mary Statue is Back

Rededication and Blessing of the Statue of St. Mary and the Child, Jesus
Wednesday, March 25, 6 PM High Mass
The Feast of the Annunciation

At long last, the statue of Our Lady will be back in the Church in time for Easter! The statue with its original cornice, niche ‘cap’ with fleur de lis on top will be blessed on the Feast of the Annunciation, a Prayer Book Holy Day, March 25.

We want to extend our thanks and deepest appreciation to Mr. Richard McCoy of the restoration department of the Indiana Museum of Art for his painstaking and delicate work in getting the statue of Mary ‘back in one piece.’

The statue, unbeknownst to anyone, was hollow and cracked in half across the torso. Don Harris, who is also an art student at IUPUI, assisted Richard in this project and together they worked to ‘put Mary back together again.’ Sister Ellen Carney, an iconographer, has been working with them and doing touch-up painting on Mary’s gown, etc, to conceal the area where the restoration work, glues, adhesives and inside armatures. This was a very intricate process.

Richard has documented his restoration work through many digital photographs (‘before, during and after’) so that All Saints will have a complete history/report of the work that was done on the statue so that this valuable information will be placed in our files and archives.

The expectation is that Richard and his wife and children will be able to attend the rededication Mass; there is a possibility that an Indianapolis Star reporter may be present to use this event as a future news article and photo-op.

People in the News

Rose Lane is back at All Saints after some significant surgery on her achilles tendon which required home rest for some weeks. Welcome back—the choir and the parish missed you.

Brad King recovering at home. Brad King is recovering at home after surgery and will be on home rest for some time. The Rector has been bringing him the Sacrament and running some errands for him, since Brad lives only a few blocks from Jerry and Fr. Steve.

Helping Hands ministry (see the article by Coordinator Jane Billman) provided these persons with home-cooked meals for about a week after surgery, which is the focus of this great outreach/pastoral ministry to our parish members who may be in need of a meal following hospitalization/surgery.

Our prayers continue for Nancy Thompson and John Thompson. We love you both!

Peggy Hannon, former vestry member, relocated to Washington DC to assume a new position with the Veterans Administration. We miss you Peggy and do come back and visit.

Michael Dettner has relocated to Nashville, TN for professional purposes. Do come back and visit as you can, Michael!

Steve Jamison has moved to a new apartment in the neighborhood near All Saints.

Andrea [Qualitza} and David Durbin have relocated to Carmel, but are still planning to attend All Saints as members. At their request, Fr. Steve is going to bless their new home in the near future.

Blake Watson who had been attending Grace Church, Muncie, is now attending All Saints and is going to be baptized at The Great Vigil of Easter, Holy Saturday Night, April 11. Blake is a grad student in geriatrics at IUPUI and now lives in Indianapolis. God bless you Blake!

Don Bryant is planning to be confirmed at the Mid Central Confirmation Liturgy in Eastertide on Saturday May 9th. Trinity Church is hosting the Deanery Confirmation this year. (Last year All Saints hosted the Confirmation liturgy). God’s blessings upon you as well, Don!

It is the policy of the Church not to publish church members’ addresses etc. online. Church members will be given new parish directories by Easter.

Walking with Jesus—A Lenten Journey

All Saints invites you to spend time in prayer and meditation during this Lent. We are offering a Sunday evening simple meal and prayer opportunity on Sunday March 1st, March 8th and March 22nd.

There will be a meal at 5 PM in the Parish Hall, followed by a prayer and meditation time at 6 PM in the Mary Chapel. The service will focus on the journey of Jesus as reflected in the Lenten gospels. There will be time for quiet prayer and contemplation on the readings offered at the service.

Fr Dan Billman, Cathy Scott and Joan Head will lead the service.
