The teacher wished his parents would transfer him to a special school so that Billy could be protected from embarrassment. When it came to projects or anything out of the ordinary, the teacher was always afraid that the other kids would laugh at Billy’s efforts.

...She distributed to each student an empty Leggs container, you know the kind of package that looks like an egg.

...And Billy said, “In the spring, the tomb was empty and that brought new life to everyone.”

...And that Jesus will meet them in the future when they get back home.

...Some of us are blessed with the kind of faith that convinces us about the resurrection. ... Maybe we got up this Easter morning hoping that things would be different, and they aren’t.

If you are in that category remember the Gospel of an empty tomb. ... ...All they have is an empty tomb, the strange announcement that Jesus is risen and the reminder of what Jesus had talked about – his own betrayal and death and “rising again”, whatever that might mean.

...And, yes, the story of the women who are still afraid is an Easter story. ... If we are going to experience Easter, it will probably happen like it happened to the women at the tomb. ... We are still here in Indianapolis, Indiana, in the midst of a recession and in the midst of a world that seems hell bent on going to hell. ... All we have tonight is the announcement given to the women and the reminder of what Jesus talked about – suffering, death, and rising again.

...We might as well face the fact that it is not enough to tell us exactly what happened back there 20 centuries ago. ... It is not enough to make us understand what being raised from the dead really means or what it looks like.

...It was, for example, enough to give the women courage to run from the tomb and share the announcement and the reminder with a frightened bunch of men.

...Let us listen once more to the reminder: “Remember how he told you, that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.”

Palm Sunday Sermon by Father Tom

Perhaps nothing captures that contrast more than comparing the crowd which cheers Jesus as he enters Jerusalem and the crowd which yells “Kill Him”. That is the contrast we have acted out this morning singing All Glory Laud and Honor as marched into church with palms and then speaking our part in the dramatic reading of the Passion: Crucify Him. ... Could it be that we are supposed to understand that some of the same people yelled both Hosanna and Crucify Him? Could it be that we are supposed to see ourselves as people quite capable of both cheering and killing him?

...There is the danger of anti-Semitism, of thinking it is Jews not people like us who try to get rid of Jesus. And there is the danger of underestimating Jesus, of weakening him, unless we see that he is so threatening to our normal way of doing things that people do want to get rid of him.

...It was a time when both Jesus, who probably came from that peasant class, and his landless followers could have meant the Lord’s prayer literally. ... I had been thinking about things like that and about some of the rhetoric of the current health care struggle in Congress.

...How can such a good guy, or any of those politicians be so far from, at least in my understanding of the Jesus of the gospel?

...We need someone who was put on a cross by good people like ourselves.

About Susie Mallory

The following video was brought to our attention by Nancy Adams and concerns former parishioner Susie Mallory.

Several years ago Father Steve asked me to pull together a Mardi Gras celebration but he was concerned that it had to be for a fairly small group. I told Jason that I was sure we could give a really nice party for around 100 people (an unthinkable number to Father Steve) in the parish hall if we had standing cocktail tables. And because I knew how to make them 3" high in cardboard, I was sure they could be made 4 feet high of wood and would store flat. Jason jumped in and we made them together in the organ shop.

I have always felt that music and food do more to bring a congregation than anything else and I believe that Jason's contribution on both levels made us a much stronger church. How many gatherings have I seen at All Saints for large groups where those tables were used? I have lost count.

And so when we get gather together to celebrate in the parish hall this Fat Tuesday, I will think of the sweet unassuming man who made the tables with his own hands. Jason Overall.

...We planned to cover this with an operating fund surplus at 2008 year end of $38,250. Your vestry is putting in place plans which hopefully will result in some growth in income for year 2010. ... If we continue at this rate for the rest of the year, we project a year end deficit of $36,497, effectively wiping out the operating fund surplus.

This deficit projection is ~$10,000 less than it was last month, because the Diocese reversed its decision to withhold $10,000 in support funds which had been agreed upon three years ago. That money came in a lump sum in July, obviously skewing our income figures toward positive territory for the month.

Prorated pledge income at the end of July was 96.6% of amount pledged, higher than the national average. However, several large pledges were paid in full in January, and we can expect that percentage to sag as the year progresses.

Plate receipts were only 41% of budget for July, paralleling a decline in attendance during the summer.

The Rite of Sprinkling with Holy Water occurs during the Entrance Rite and after the Easter Acclamation which is sung, “Alleluia Christ is risen” to which the congregation sings in reply, “The Lord is risen indeed, Alleluia!”

...Dear friends, by water and the Holy Spirit we have been buried with Christ and raised to new life in him. Let us pray that the sprinkling of this water may recall to us our own baptism by which God has made us worthy to stand before him.

...O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquillity the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

...Each Sunday in Easter, for the Rite of Sprinkling with Holy Water, the tradition has been to use a different Collect or [Prayer] from the Liturgy of the Word from the Holy Saturday Night Great Vigil of Easter. Thus on the 2nd Sunday of Easter, the priest sings the Collect above found on page 291 of The Book of Common Prayer.

Then, on the third Sunday of Easter, another Collect is used from the Easter Vigil Liturgy of the Word, such as one of the Collects also on page 291, 290, 289 or 288 until we come down to the Seventh Sunday of Easter, the Sunday after the Ascension. The congregation is sprinkled with holy water as a reminder of baptism while the “Glory to God in the highest” is sung (“Gloria in excelsis”).

The Mass then continues with the Collect of the particular Sunday in Eastertide as found in The Book of Common Prayer.

...Answer: The statue of the Virgin Mary holding the child Jesus is the work of the late New York sculptor Robert Robbins, who was also responsible for some of the interior decoration of Trinity Episcopal Church in Indianapolis.

...Since our parish (which was originally built to be the Episcopal Cathedral in 1911) was named "All Saints," it is the reason that this particular title of the Virgin Mary was chosen at the time the statue was commissioned.

...While paintings, icons and statues of the Virgin Mary are common in many Episcopal churches today, All Saints was the first parish in the Diocese of Indianapolis to have a statue of Mary and votive (prayer) candles.

...Mary's shrine, light a candle and go to an area in the chapel to the left of the statue for private prayer while others are receiving Communion.

...A: Episcopalians are united in our diversity through our shared belief in the Gospel and in the use of worship services defined by The Book of Common Prayer.

...The Sign of the Cross, the use of incense, bowing to the altar, the use of holy water, holy oil for anointing -- these are all part of the Episcopal Church's catholic heritage, as is the use of Gregorian chant.

...Tyler McDonald of the Goulding & Wood organ builders in Indianapolis did the professional installation and wood restoration work on the cornice and niche construction of the backdrop -- or "Mary's house," as we affectionately refer to it.

...It is exactly nine months from Christmas Day; the Annunciation is based on Luke's Gospel, Chapter 1, in which the Angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will be the mother of the Savior.

Diocesan Outreach

The diocese has passed along two PDFs of outreach missions to Bor diocese in Sudan and the Brasilia diocese in Brazil, that can be viewed here and here.

Women's Week

Women’s Week: A Summer Retreat Experience at Waycross

...We will be adding a contingency to this budget item in case there are any problems with rotten roof decking, etc.

...The committee has decided that since scaffolding will be in place for the roof repair, it makes sense for us to undertake masonry repair/tuckpointing in the roof area. The contractor will be Broady-Campbell, the same contractor who installed the Mary Chapel altar and has previously done work at All Saints.

...We have contracted with Arsee Engineers to oversee any structural engineering and project management that may be involved in the project. They were the same firm that completed the tuckpointing analysis of the church as part of the Cornerstone Project, so they are very familiar with the building. We are also concerned that since the skylight system is new, we want to make sure the roof structure will adequately support the installation.

...Lance Ratliff and Pat Griffin met with representatives from IHPC and have been assured that since we will be restoring the existing structure with comparable materials, we should have no problem with permits.

It has been determined that the slate roof and masonry repair work can be done independently of the skylight work.

Congratulations Cathy Scott

Cathy Scott has been formally admitted as a postulant for Holy Orders for the Diaconate in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Indianapolis. Having been formally endorsed by the vestry last year as required by canon law, the rector received a formal letter of notification from the Bishop’s Office this past week.

Cathy has completed preliminary requirements of ‘shadowing’ a deacon’s day to day ministry last Lent, out in Plainfield, at St. ... By requirement of the Commission on Ministry, a Discernment /spiritual growth Committee consisting of members of the parish met with Cathy at regular intervals over the past year. She completed an intensive weekend with the Commission on Ministry at Waycross earlier this year.

Because virtually all candidates for the Diaconate must continue in their secular careers/jobs, the program of study for the Diaconate accommodates the diverse needs of each candidate and meet specified weekends of study, class etc.

Cathy has served on vestry, is an acolyte and eucharistic visitor to the hospitalized, nursing homes etc, has organized/facilitated various adult education forums and programs, implemented a very proactive Outreach Committee which is now chaired by Patricia Griffin; she continues to serve on the outreach committee along with others and is one of our regular ‘delivery people’ along with others to the Damien Center Food Pantry from our Sunday ingatherings.

Cathy continues to work with Fr. Don Harris, who is also an art student at IUPUI, assisted Richard in this project and together they worked to ‘put Mary back together again.’ Sister Ellen Carney, an iconographer, has been working with them and doing touch-up painting on Mary’s gown, etc, to conceal the area where the restoration work, glues, adhesives and inside armatures.

...Seeing her shabby, unkempt appearance, the pastor guessed the reason and, taking her by the hand, took her inside and found a place for her in the Sunday school class. The child was so happy that they found room for her, and she went to bed that night thinking of the children who have no place to worship Jesus.

...As her poor little body was being moved, a worn and crumpled red purse was found which seemed to have been rummaged from some trash dump.

Inside was found 57 cents and a note, scribbled in childish handwriting, which read: 'This is to help build the little church bigger so more children can go to Sunday School.'

...Carrying this note and the c racked, red pocketbook to the pulpit, he told the story of her unselfish love and devotion.

...When told that the church could not pay so much, he offered to sell it to the little church for 57 cents.

...Within five years the little girl's gift had increased to $250,000.00—a huge sum for that time (near the turn of the century).

...Have a look, too, at the Good Samaritan Hospital and at a Sunday School building which houses hundreds of beautiful children, built so that no child in the area will ever need to be left outside during Sunday school time.

In one of the rooms of this building may be seen the picture of the sweet face of the little girl whose 57 cents, so sacrificially saved, made such remarkable history.

Message from the Treasurer

Today or tomorrow you should receive a 2008 year-end giving statement if you pledged any amount to the Operating Account for 2008 or if you did not pledge but gave $250 or more during the year. ...Carols were rarely sung in Anglican churches until the 1880's when Archbishop of Truro (and later Canterbury) E.W. Benson drew up the now-famous format for the Nine Scripture Lessons and Carols Service which has remained popular in England and in other countries where the Anglican or Episcopal Church is located.

...One legend has it that the church organ had been damaged by mice but Gruber wrote it to be performed by two voices and a guitar; it was first sung at the Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve in 1818. It’s popularity was such that it has been translated into 300 languages and famously played a key role in the unofficial truce in the trenches in 1914 because it was the only carol that both British and German soldiers knew.

...In 1848 she published a hymn book for children, a book of verse explaining the Apostles’ Creed in simple terms which gave us several famous Episcopal hymns. So to the question on who made the world, the answer was that the children would sing “All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small...”

...The hymn she wrote, “Once in Royal David’s City stood a lowly cattle shed...” was the way children learned where Jesus was born. Children’s questions about death were answered with “There is a green hill far away, outside a city wall, where our dear Lord was crucified who died to save us all.”

...Today, the hymn is used as the opening processional in the King’s College, Cambridge, Festival of Lessons and Carols, and in thousands of Episcopal and Anglican churches the world over, as well as being a popular carol for Christmas Eve Midnight Mass.

Article by Father Tom Ehrich

I grew up in the state that almost became Michigan and often passed through the town that almost became Detroit.

In the early years of the automotive industry, the two centers of innovation were Detroit and Auburn, Indiana.

...As it happened, auto production settled in the Detroit area because the Great Lakes promised better transportation of raw materials.

...I grew up around assembly plants, component plants, parts suppliers, and the up-and-down lives of union workers. As the US auto industry craters, I can feel the agonies that automakers, auto suppliers, auto workers and auto towns are going through.

...They refused to slim down their payroll, especially in middle and upper management, and to speed up product development.

...In my consulting work, I often use Ford's obsession with the F150 truck as an example of what drags churches under.

...This isn't a quiet or peaceful place to be, as the world knows peace.

...As you know, this isn't an "easy" place to be a priest or a parishioner. Not only is the work hard for all of us, but the congregation's dedication to serving means engagement in the restless churning of a changing world.

There is still work to be done on the statue in terms of painting etc, so while the statue will not be back in time for Christmas Eve, we should have the image of our Blessed Lady in the Church by the end of January or before.

My thanks to Mr. Richard McCoy, of the restoration department at the IMA for his 'ingenious' work because the project was extremely delicate and involved careful applications of armatures (strengthing rods inside the statue, which it never had) and special 'high-tech' glues and adhesives. ... McCoy was assisted by our own Don Harris, who is an artist and was responsible for getting us the contact with the IMA through the faculty at IUPUI's art department. Thank you so much Don.

Some of you have inquired of me if the original hanging lamp with the blue glass will also be hung near the statue as it had been for many years. Yes, indeed it will. It has been carefully packed away in the sacristy.

...When you have a birthday and your family hangs a sign they made up over the door—when the military returns home from war and they are met with poster-board signs of affection—every time you see it, signage conveys value.

...In our video, the visitors were not valued, just the ones who ran the show: the barista, the manager and the manager's wife.

...Lack of signage in a church leaves the indefinable impression to a visitor that, "this church was not made for you.

...Now, I understand that pastor might need a parking sign in order to make sure the service goes off without a hitch. ... In our video, it was the only signage visible—saying that the barista (minister) was much more important than the visitor.

...The way you show that, is in the signage leading up to your entry, and then following that throughout your building. ... Your Info Center does not resolve the timid visitor's need to know something we should have already told them.

...“Write the vision and engrave it so plainly upon tablets that everyone who passes may [be able to] read [it easily and quickly] as he hastens by.”

...For more insight into signage, I wrote a few articles earlier this year about it in Church Executive and Religious Product News.

On Sunday, February 3rd, at 2:30 PM, there will be a performance by the Kevin Kouts Quartet as part of the Arts at All Saints concert series. The hour-long performance will be followed by a festive Mardi-Gras themed reception in the Parish Hall complete with a New Orleans-syle menu of food and drink.

Admission is free with voluntary donations accepted.

The Kevin Kouts Quartet will perform a mix of traditional jazz and jazz/rock fusion tunes featuring composers like Billy Cobham, Horace Silver, and Thelonius Monk, plus a few of their own. The band is a meeting of musical friends of varying backgrounds and experiences who have come together to make music that is familiar, like comfort food, and at the same time fresh and dynamic. This will be their fourth year to perform in the All Saints series, and so far each performance has been great fun.

And don't worry...there will plenty of time to enjoy the show and reception and still make it to your Super Bowl party!

(The scan barely doesn't do it justice.)

Since the cornerstone for All Saints was laid in 1910, we're assuming that this card was produced somewhere between 1911-1938.

All Saints can barely be seen under all the snow!

...The photo was taken by The Rev. Rush Sloan, who was Vicar and Canon from 1914-1916. Here is a quote from "Episcopal Bishops: by Sarah Pratt (who lived across the street from All Saints was the mother or grandmother of Arthur Pratt, whom you may remember from Christ Church): "Once when All Saints and it adjacent trees and bushes were covered with snow, a young clergyman, the Reverend Rush Sloan, who was staying at the Bishop's (Francis), came over to our lawn opposite, and took a picture. This very beautiful picture the Bishop had made into a Christmas card, which he sent to Bishop Lloyd, of New York, and to the Mission House. The Spirit of Missions (a publication of the national church) reproduced it on its cover. Unfortunately the name of the church was omitted, and the Indianapolis Diocese did not receive credit."

Community Forum on Kenya

<dc:subject>All Are Welcome</dc:subject>

The crisis continues as we are learning from news reports and people returning. ... ...The keyboards first served the Casavant organ that was at Christ Church on the circle before the Moller organ that was then replaced by the Wolff organ that serves the Cathedral now.

...The console and control systems, which were state of the art at the time, served the musician of All Saints Church well for many years.

...Through an extremely fortunate turn of events, Goulding & Wood came into possession of a console it supplied for Loyola University in Chicago, and the company was in a position to pass along the console for a small fraction of what a new one would cost. Indeed, while the $45,000.00 price tag for this project raised some questions during the evaluation of the Cornerstone Campaign (and rightly so), it pales in comparison to the more than $125,000.00 it would have cost had the console been all new.

...Paul's Church has graciously allowed us to use their portative organ during this time as well, and we appreciate their generosity greatly.

...By the same token, the control systems will once again be reliable, so unexpected changes in the stops playing won't create disruptions. In addition, greater changes in sounds will be possible, so that hymn accompaniments can be more creative, choral accompaniments more sensitive, and solo literature more exciting. The sound of the organ won't change, but organists will be able to access the variety of sounds as never before.
