Stewardship. It is a word we think of when the church needs money. But the truth is so much more than that. Stewardship isn’t just money. Stewardship means a commitment of talent. But even more important it is the commitment of dreams. It is the commitment of heart. It isn’t a commitment that requires agreement. It is a commitment that requires the most important thing that we have to offer, a slice of ourselves whatever or wherever we are.

You see, I believe stewardship is not about agreeing with everything that is going on and throwing money at it only when you have to. Stewardship is living with commitment and purpose. Stewardship is about giving not because you feel you have to or because you have pledged that you will, or because of guilt. It is about seeing the bigger picture.

It is about knowing that without stewardship of the things we love they will not exist. For me, it is evangelism for the life that I think we should be living. It is not just something that adults do. It is something that children, adults, and seniors do because their souls compel them to.

Life without stewardship is not really living. You see, stewardship is about feeding what you love and giving what you can if you think it will help accomplish the things you believe in. I see people every day who are walking in the shadows of life. They cocoon with excuses and shut out the needs all around them. They commit to nothing and in return they get nothing. They are shadows of people.

At the same time, stewardship is not about giving what you can’t afford to give. It is not about giving until it hurts. It is about giving until it feels so much better. Whether your gift is flower arranging, singing, tending the altar, feeding the poor, touching the elderly, giving parties that bring people together….it doesn’t matter.

It is about being committed to our Lord’s message that it is better to give than to receive. And in truth, it feels a lot better.
